6 Foreword Many, many years ago, when I was not yet 20 and my ponies were in their prime, a friend and I went on a trail ride. The ponies ran barefoot and we sat on their bare backs. Only a Navajo blanket separated our buttocks from the fur of the animals. Our heads were only protected from the sun by a hat. Since it was a trail ride, we had backpacks with us. Logically, where else should the provisions go? I had acquired a topographical hiking map and studied this colorful sheet of paper over and over again with total fascination, while I dreamed of roaming the country on horseback. But I am not only a dreamer, I am also a doer! And so we set off, the four of us, completely inexperienced and in good spirits! On no single day did we achieve the planned goal. It was bewitched, I could turn this darned map as I wanted, it never matched reality. But we were young and flexible. We didn't worry too much and always confidently took the paths that seemed most beautiful to us. Our buttocks hurt at times, but we asked cheerfully in the little village around the Potzberg, because that's where we had ended up, on the next farm, whether they would take us in. And they did. What sounds crazy and borderline today was very easy back then. The ponies survived the whole thing without damage, they are both around 30 years old. The girlfriend and I will always remember this trip fondly, despite the sore buttocks. We met a lot of nice and friendly people and had a great time. At the time, coincidence brought us to Gaby Merges, among others, an experienced trail rider and VFD member, whose trail riding station is now a member in the Palatinate on horseback. Our unannounced arrival and the somewhat sparse equipment astonished her at first, but then she was very amused and welcomed us warmly. Then she carefully gave us some tips on how to do one thing or another better when trail riding. 6th

7 A dream come true That was the beginning of my trail riding career, which reached its climax so far on the last Whitsun festival in the form of the (passed) trail riding guide test of the VFD. See, everyone starts small! I am glad that I was able to walk or ride this path together with my comrades. Embedded in a community that supports and represents my interests, that enables the exchange among like-minded people, that organizes joint rides and festivals and that offers and promotes well-founded training. An association that allows me, together with friends, to enjoy the beauty of nature, even beyond my home country, on the back of my horse. With the VFD by my side, all of this seems feasible and even lofty goals attainable! I had a couple of trail riders last year, which made me very happy. Again I met nice and friendly people who indulge in the same passion as me: trail riding! The ultimate adventure for us passionate recreational riders. Experience nature in harmony with our partner horse. Growing close with him while mastering all obstacles as a team. Conquer unfamiliar terrain with like-minded comrades. Feel free and get rid of the stress and sadness of everyday life. Uwe Frank, himself the operator of a trail riding station in the Palatinate on horseback, was given asylum with his pony with me. The next stop after me should be at Gaby Merges. Impossible for me to resist the temptation to go with him. It was a wonderful ride through woods and meadows, past Lichtenberg Castle and Remigiusberg. Another experience that I will remember fondly! The raised index finger is constantly chasing us about the risks that our hobby entails. Be it because of the dangers of riding or handling the horse. Be it because of the trailer, the accommodation of strangers or now even because of data protection. Let's find the strength to face these adversities and pursue our passion. What I want to tell you is this: don't be the ones who look sadly out the window when riders go by. Rather be the ones who ride! Do not be the ones who raise an eyebrow in amazement when they are told that you have taken on foreign trail riders. Better be the ones who experience the joy of welcoming foreign trail riders! Do not be the ones who scrupulously look for errors in the texts of others. Rather be the ones who write the lyrics! VFD is and will remain a reliable partner for all of these things! What you get for it is priceless: the camaraderie and the exchange among friends, the conquering of true gems in our landscape, and all of this on horseback, just like in our dreams! Your sports warden Dagmar Cullmann 7

The old sentence that half of the horse's training should take place in the field is particularly well received by us recreational riders. Quite a few of us even only ride off-road and train our horses there. And also in the field: To keep the horse healthy, for more safety and more horse-friendly influence, gymnastics is a lifelong topic. Michaela Kondr, VFD trainer, shows a wide range of tried and tested possibilities of how horses can be challenged in the field and deals with various problems. 9
